Winter Fitness Tips

Exercising in winter can be challenging.  Trying to stay fit and healthy in the winter can be challenging.  Remember some of these winter fitness tips to stay safe and healthy over the cold months.

  1. Stay hydrated. In the summertime, it seems as though we are always naturally reaching for our water bottles.  We are hot and sweating, so naturally we are mindful of replenishing our water.  However, in the wintertime, it is easier to forget to drink enough fluids.  Remember to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water each day.  Another strategy is to drink half of your body weight, in fluids, each day (example: 150 lb woman should drink 75 fluid ounces daily).  Staying hydrated will boost your immunity and keep you energized.
  2. Wear appropriate clothing. If you are going to the gym or exercising outdoors, it is vital that you wear appropriate clothing.  Just because you are running from the gym to your car does not mean that you should be going outside into sub-freezing temperatures, wearing only your exercise shorts and a jacket. Pack an exercise bag and bring extra pants and warm tops to keep your body warm after a workout.
  3. Be aware of ice. Many great forms of exercise can happen outdoors, including skiing, snowboarding, ice skating and sledding.  Be aware of icy patches, as they are serious risks for falls.  Even healthy individuals with great balance can fall on the ice and suffer a broken bone.  Be aware of ice and tread carefully.
  4. Eat well. Don’t fall into the trap of eating warm winter comfort food that is full of fat and refined carbohydrates.  Just because it is cold outside, does not mean that you should change any of your healthy eating habits.  Warm up with a nice cup of hot tea for comfort instead.
